Directing is the management function of providing guidance to workers to achieve goals. When directing, managers guide and oversee the performance of employees to make sure that they are working toward the company’s objectives. Directing is considered the “heart” of management because it is the point from which the actual work starts. It is the source of employees’ energy and performance, and it maintains the healthy functioning of the business. Directing is important because it is the starting point of all action, it coordinates individuals’ work and effort, it motivates employees, it provides stability and structure, it initiates changes smoothly, and it ensures resources are used efficiently. Directing can vary depending on the situation, but it has certain characteristics no matter what. It is pervasive, continuous, people-focused, creative, and executive.
