3.03 Mindset matters

It might seem that putting customers first only benefits customers. Not true! Demonstrating a customer service mindset creates advantages for everyone involved. Understanding these benefits may inspire you to make developing this mindset one of your top priorities.

Benefit from satisfied customers

Customer benefits. Customers benefit from your customer service mindset by having a more pleasant, satisfactory experience with your company. Most likely, their questions have been answered, and their needs have been met. When employees demonstrate a customer service mindset, it creates a positive atmosphere for everyone.

Business benefits. Emphasizing customer service can help a business be more competitive. In many cases, customers compare similar businesses and choose the one that provides the best customer service. If the service is really outstanding, they may even recommend the business to others. Now, the business enjoys both repeat business as well as new business (and, likely, increased profits).

A customer service mindset also benefits the business by reducing complaints. Handling complaints costs money because of the time and effort involved, the possible loss of business, and, in some cases, refunds to customers. Customers who receive excellent service are less likely to complain. Or, if they do, they may receive a very good impression of the business if their complaints are handled satisfactorily.

Employee benefits. The most obvious personal benefit of demonstrating a customer service mindset is that it will support and advance your career. Customers who appreciate your efforts may compliment you to management. And, when your supervisor observes the way you interact with customers, your mindset and actions should positively affect your performance evaluation. A good evaluation often means a raise or a promotion. In addition, learning to deal with customers competently will likely increase your own self-confidence.
